说起经典恐怖小说，一定绕不开爱伦·坡（Edgar Allan Poe）。
爱伦·坡对于现在的恐怖小说、侦探小说、科幻小说都有深远影响。他那些怪异、恐怖 情节，充满夸张、隐喻和象征的表现手法，对于人性、心理和精神状态的细腻描写，都已载入教科书（文学专业的同学又想起了那些年被爱伦·坡支配的恐惧）。
爱伦·坡创作了很多经典，如《厄舍府的倒塌》（The Fall of the House of Usher）、《莫格街谋杀案》（The Murders in the Rue Morgue）等，也许很多同学已经读过。我们今天想推荐的是《泄密的心》（The Tell-Tale Heart）。
这篇短篇小说是一个神经过敏、病态扭曲的年轻人的独白，讲述自己杀人的全过程。他因为邻居老头有一只像兀鹰的眼睛而心生杀机，他谋杀得手后把尸体肢解并埋在了老人卧房的地板之下，但他的幻觉使他混淆了老人怀表走动的声音和心脏的跳动声。
凌晨时，警员来调查，年轻人不一会儿就被死者的巨大“心跳”声惊吓得失常错乱，对罪行供认不讳。
